Wholesale Market Study Tour a Success

05 February 2013

In January Horticulture Wales brought together a group of horticulture businesses growing a whole range of fruit, vegetables and salad crops for a study tour of one of the country’s busiest wholesale markets.

The aim of the tour, which took place at the Western International Market in Middlesex, was to give the businesses the opportunity to meet some of the 75 wholesalers who sell fruit and vegetables grown in the UK.  The wholesalers discussed how they collaborate with growers both locally and abroad to secure the best possible prices for produce, which enables them to sell competitively to the restaurants and shops who buy their produce.   The group were also able to find out more about how a wholesale market operates and investigated opportunities for supplying Welsh produce.

The tour was led by Peter Clarke who has many years’ experience working with wholesale markets.

Richard Lewis from Horticulture Wales said “it was a great success and   the businesses we took along got a lot out of the day”.
