Recipe Book Receives International Recognition

Success is on the menu for Horticulture Wales after a free recipe book it developed to encourage chefs to use more locally-sourced fruit and veg was nominated for a prestigious international prize.

Chris Owens cookbook reduced (278px * 235px)‘Cooking with Welsh Horticulture’ has been named the Wales winner in the ‘Best Local Cuisine Book’ category of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, and will now be put forward against similar entries from other countries in a bid to claim the category’s overall ‘Best in the World’ title at a ceremony held this May at the inaugural Beijing Cookbook Fair in China.

The free guide, which brings together a collection of 35 mouth-watering recipes from renowned Welsh chefs such as Bryan Webb and Ross Bruce, is specifically targeted at cooks and chefs working in cafés, pubs, restaurants, hotels, and the wider Welsh hospitality sector.

‘Cooking with Welsh Horticulture’ aims to promote the greater use of seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs, as well as highlighting the benefits of building long-term relationships with local growers and suppliers. The bilingual 72-page publication includes recipes for tasty soups, delicious vegetable dishes like leek crumble, scrumptious seafood servings, and delightful desserts. It also incorporates a special section outlining the traditional harvest periods for a broad range of field grown crops.

“It’s a great achievement to have already been named the winner in Wales, and now we can’t wait for the final international awards ceremony in May, when our book will be flying the flag for Wales and the horticulture industry too.”

The annual Gourmand World Cookbook Awards were founded in 1995 by Edouard Cointreau, President of culinary publication Gourmand Magazine, to “reward and honour those who cook with words”. Each year, entries are received from more than 130 countries to try and find the best out of the 26,000 plus food and wine books published every year.
